Salo family counselling clinic

The Salo family counselling clinic is for families, young people of primary education age, parents and co-operating partners.

Parents should contact the clinic if they are worried about a childīs development or behaviour, if they need advice raising their children and there are conflicts between family members, if they are considering divorce or if there are questions about visitation rights. No referral in required and parents can contact the clinic themselves. All services are confidential and free of charge.

The clinic can provide professional assistance from a psychologist, social worker and consulting paediatric psychiatrist.

You should contact the family counselling clinic if:

- a child has problems at home, day care, school or with friends
- you are worried about a childīs development or behaviour
- a child has learning difficulties
- you are concerned about a preschoolerīs readiness for school
- you need help with parenting in general
- conflicts exist between family members
- parents are considering divorce
- child visitation rights cause problems

Sometimes parents spend a long time considering whether their concerns or problems are worthy of contacting the clinic. We want to emphasise that any concern related to a child or family situation are good reasons to contact us!

We usually invite the entire family to the first appointment. If, for example, the childīs teacher or a nurse has referred the family to the parenting and family clinic, we may also invite him/her to the first appointment. However, we always agree on this in advance with the family. At the first appointment, we try to understand the cause and extent of the problem. We work with the family to make a plan about possible further actions, such as individual appointments for the child and the parentīs appointments. We mainly work in pairs (often a psychologist and social worker), and our consulting physician is part of the group if needed. When necessary and if agreed with the family, we co-operate with, for example, the teacher, special needs teacher, day care worker, social worker, nurse or school physician.

After the testing period or initial survey, we plan the necessary therapy or send the child for further testing. Our most common forms of therapy are discussions with the school or day care, family appointments and family therapy, support appointments or individual therapy for the child, therapeutic groups for the child and support groups for parents.
